” . . . any gardener or naturalist could only be delighted to be given The New Sylva: A Discourse of Forest & Orchard Trees for the 21st Century by Gabriel Hemery and Sarah Simblet, renovating John Evelyn’s classic, Sylva, of 1664. Beautifully illustrated with black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings by Simblet, it sets out “to revitalise our wood culture: to plant a tree; to marvel at the beauty and richness of a woodland…”.  The New Sylva looks to the future for each species — and it’s a delight on every page.” London Evening Standard

“This is a magnificent book which will appeal not only to anybody interested in trees, but also those who appreciate beautiful books. Highly recommended.” Irish Forestry

“Gabriel Hemery’s text is a precise, fascinating, fluent, wide-ranging and hard-headed synthesis: an excellent popular introduction to tree biology and forestry. But the book is more than that . . . Hemery is out to celebrate and inspire passion and love . . . The drawings really are astonishing: they are fine and vivid, combining anatomical precision with qualities that arouse intense emotion . . . This book is gorgeous, precious and important.” Resurgence and Ecologist

A celebration of stunning sylvan art

posted on October 22, 2015

Many of our regular readers will be aware that this year we are auctioning a selection of special limited edition prints from The New Sylva. The prints have been selling well and are earning the charity much-needed funds to support its work across Britain.

The New Sylva - Bloomsbury PublishingThis week we are excited to be auctioning perhaps some of the most impressive and iconic images from the book. These include the cedar of Lebanon featured in the frontispiece, and the box woodland at the Chequers Estate (the Prime Minister’s residence) that adorns the cover of The New Sylva. Also newly listed is the stunning image of the unique high altitude oak woodland on Dartmoor, Wistman’s Wood.

Just a few days remain in the online auction for older listed items including that of the dramatic Caledonian pinewood, Black Wood of Rannoch.

Feedback from happy auction winners has been very positive, with many surprised just how detailed the prints are, their size (often larger than reproduced in the book), and their quality.

Special edition prints from The New Sylva to be auctioned

posted on June 16, 2015

Eighty special edition prints from the award-winning book The New Sylva are to be auctioned to raise money for charity.

The Sylva Foundation supported the production of the book, written in a personal capacity by our Chief Executive Gabriel Hemery, by appointing Sarah Simblet as its artist-in-residence for two years (2012-14). Given our special relationship with the artist, we are delighted to announce that we will be auctioning special edition prints of Sarah’s stunning tree portraits, botanical details and woodland scenes via an online auction site.

  • The giclee prints will be produced by a specialist fine art printmaker on 330gsm Ilford Galerie Gold smooth cotton paper with light-fast inks.
  • Printing has been calibrated personally by the artist to ensure the finest quality reproduction.
  • Each print will be hand-signed by Sarah Simblet, and accompanied by an attractive Certificate of Authenticity, hand-signed by both authors of The New Sylva and embossed with a unique identifying seal.
  • The prints will be supplied unmounted and rolled in a large diameter tube, allowing the winning bidder to mount and frame to suit the final placement of the artwork.

This is a unique opportunity to own a high quality print of Sarah Simblet’s work, as the artist rarely sells her work as prints, and a high level of interest is expected. All proceeds from sales will support the charitable work of the Sylva Foundation.

If you are interested in being among the first to know when the auction goes live, you can add your email to a list being compiled by the Sylva Foundation. The auction was first announced in February as we had hoped to launch the auction in the Spring (if you have already provided your email there is no need to do so again). The auction will go live in a few weeks time and remain open during the summer months.

Sign up for early-bird notice of the launch of the auction using the form below.

Thank you for your interest.
