There are just eight days remaining in our fundraising campaign in support of Forest Schools via our Love Trees Love Wood campaign.
The Forest School movement is the single most powerful vehicle for environmental education in Britain today. With partners the Forest School Association we have been raising money to support more Forest Schools around the country. We are particularly keen to support new Forest Schools in urban sites and in areas where deprivation is high.
We have used a crowdfunding site Indiegogo, which provides ‘perks’ in return for donations. This has been our first fundraising effort using this method. We have been delighted to receive over £1000 in donations over the Summer but the amount raised to date is falling short of our target of £30,000. Not only do we want to raise more money for children to take part in Forest Schools, but if we exceed our target, the fundraising cost of using Indiegogo falls from 9% to 4%.
Thank you to every one who has support the campaign so far. If you are able to donate we would love your support. If you are unable to donate, please help us by promoting the campaign.
Following the launch of our crowdfunding campaign for Forest Schools, in partnership with the Forest School Association (read more), we are asking for help from others who share our passion for environmental education.
Donations are needed to help us reach our fundraising target but there are other ways that you may be able to help.
Donate a ‘perk’
Crowdfunding works by thanking people who donate with a ‘perk’. Can you offer up a perk that would encourage others to donate? If so, we would love to hear from you.
If you run a tree nursery perhaps you could offer a pack of 100 trees, your outdoor clothing company could donate items, or bushcrafters could offer a bushcraft training day. Perhaps you have something else of value that you could donate (it doesn’t have to be related to outdoor education) and which donors may wish to receive as a perk in return for their donation. The two charities running the campaign would be pleased to acknowledge your support publicly.
- You donate to the campaign partners a product or service with a guide price equal to its usual value – e.g. £500.
- We list the product or service as a ‘perk’ in return for a donation of at least £500, or sometimes more if a unique opportunity. These can be one-off or limited to any number. The donation of the perk is acknowledged publicly (if desired) and promoted.
- Donors who give £500 and select the perk you offer, will receive it at an agreed time.
- Our campaign receives the £500 from the donor.

Spread the word
Another way that we appreciate with your help, is to spread the word about the campaign. Here are some ideas:
Support the Love Trees Love Wood campaign – add this banner to your communications
Leading child play expert Tim Gill recently visited a Forest School site to take part in our film about the importance of bringing young people closer to the natural world. In this short extract he talks passionately about the power of Forest School. He will feature alongside educators and children in a longer film to be released soon as part of our Love Trees Love Wood campaign, which is raising funds towards environmental education.

Love Trees Love Wood is a campaign of the Sylva Foundation running during 2014 to help raise awareness of the importance of trees and wood, and to help raise funds to support environmental education.
Our fundraising campaign begins in June – here’s a short teaser of a film that we are working on at the moment featuring the Forest School Association.

Join Sylva in celebrating our wood culture during 2014
The Sylva Foundation is undertaking many activities during 2014, the 350th anniversary of the publication of Evelyn’s Sylva, and our fifth year since becoming a charity. Celebrations include the publication of The New Sylva, sponsored by us and published by Bloomsbury in April, and our support of a series of exhibitions and trails across the UK and Ireland during the year. To bring all these activities together we have launched a new campaign:
Love Trees Love Wood is a campaign celebrating our relationship with trees and wood. There are two ways that you can share your love . . .
- Share your stories and photos – we are collecting messages from people around the world about trees and forests. Why not share your love? Post your stories, photos and films on our Facebook page.
- Give & support forest education – help us raise money towards a program of exciting education work with young people. All proceeds to the charitable work of the Sylva Foundation and selected education partners (to be announced soon).
To kickstart the campaign we are giving away a signed copy of The New Sylva on the campaign’s Facebook page – see below to enter.
