The New Sylva returns

posted on November 16, 2021

After selling out early in 2021, we are delighted to announce that The New Sylva is back in print in a new format, with signed copies available in our online shop. The book was co-authored by our CEO Gabriel Hemery as a way of promoting the Sylva Foundation and raising funds towards our activities.

The New Sylva is a detailed and sumptuous celebration of trees and forests, by authors Gabriel Hemery and Sarah Simblet. First published by Bloomsbury in 2014, the 400 pages of The New Sylva features more than 100 tree species, accompanied by 200 specially commissioned pen and ink drawings. This new 2021 Edition is a slightly smaller format of the award-winning book, and the layout is identical to the 2014 original, it is now available to enjoy at half the price. This would make a perfect Christmas gift for the nature lover in your life, and help support Sylva Foundation’s activities!

The original (now ‘deluxe’) edition with the red spine is still out of print but coming spring 2022.

The public enjoying the Sylva Trail at Westonbirt National Arboretum

The Sylva Trail – celebrating the 350th anniversary of John Evelyn’s Sylva and Britain’s wood culture – continues to draw visitors at the Forestry Commission’s National Arboretum at Westonbirt. Extracts from the book, together with illustrations by Sarah Simblet from The New Sylva, feature in twenty panels placed around the arboretum

The trail is open until the end of August, when Sylva Foundation staff are looking forward to taking part in Treefest at the arboretum: 29th-31st August 2014.

Over the Summer kids are encouraged to roam among trees and nature, with five weeks of free activities and crafts, plus admission is free for children from 23 July – 31 August 2014. With 600 acres to explore, a line-up of fantastic summer events, free activity sheets and quizzes and 10 natural play areas to enjoy, there is no better way to spend a Summer’s day.

From 29th to 31st July a special event – Drawn to nature – aims to encourage families to be inspired by trees to create their own masterpieces. There will be a range of activities to try including nature printing, water colour and wood block printing onto fabric. Perhaps someone will be inspired to become the artist for the next edition of Sylva in another generation’s time!

The New Sylva reviewed by Tony Kirkham

The New Sylva - Bloomsbury Publishing

The New Sylva – Bloomsbury Publishing

Tony Kirkham, Head of the Arboretum at Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, has reviewed The New Sylva for Confor’s Timber & Forestry News (June issue).

“This amazing work is a celebration of John Evelyn and is not just a pretty book, but a reference work captured and packed with useful information by Gabriel Hemery that will be used by many horticulturists and arboriculturists.”

“The text is very easy to read and makes compulsive reading, but one of the highlights which will make sure that this book is left on the coffee table and not placed on the bookshelf is the two-hundred beautiful line drawings that are meticulously and accurately drawn by Sarah Simblet, illustrating this wonderful work and capturing the essence of our truly magical woodlands and arboreta.”

The Sylva Foundation is the only online retailer offering copies signed by both authors. All sale proceeds go towards our charitable work.
