We’re excited to be working with Forest Research on an exciting new project called Living Layers, to investigate how woodland structure influences biodiversity.
Living Layers is a new project added to the line-up in Forest Lab, part of myForest. It is aimed at woodland owners and managers. By sharing basic information about their woodland, researchers will create and share a biodiversity score and coloured maps showing how wildlife and habitats vary across their woodland.

Woodland Owners taking part will receive:
3D visualisation of their woodland, created using recent laser (LiDAR) surveys from the Environment Agency.
Unique insights into their woodland’s structure and how it impacts biodiversity and resilience.
Detailed maps showing biodiversity indicators for each area shared.
All woodland owners need to do is share at least one mapped sub-compartment area of their woodland and some simple inventory details from your myForest account. The more information provided, the more detailed and useful the outputs will be to the woodland owner.
By taking part, woodland owners will not only gain a deeper understanding of their woodland but will also help scientists improve future research and tools for woodland owners across the country.
Applications now open!
If you are interested in joining this project, please visit the Living Layers project information page in Forest Lab, after creating a myForest account (or logging into an existing account).
