We once had a very active following on X/Twitter, but with its shift towards a toxic environment and increased misinformation we made the decision to quit the platform two years ago. This was a brave decision as it meant leaving behind several thousand followers and an active engaged audience. We since tried a number of alternatives and after a couple of false starts, landed on Bluesky.

Bluesky is designed to be a decentralised platform, meaning it’s not controlled by a single entity and can connect with other platforms, offering a more open and transparent social media experience. Bluesky emphasises accessibility, encouraging users to include alt text for images, making the platform more inclusive for people with disabilities. Bluesky has implemented social norms that discourage aggressive behaviour and encourage users to block trolls, creating a more civil environment.
We certainly felt as though we were in a social media wilderness for some time, but recently Bluesky has really begun to gain traction. Sylva Foundation is not the only charity to have made the move to Bluesky, right across the charitable sector (read more).
Many of our partners in the environmental, forestry and wood sectors have now joined Bluesky. We have a created a list or Starter Pack for all Bluesky users.
