Sylva Foundation was pleased to once again host Long Wittenham’s Village Apple Day at the Sylva Wood Centre. This years community event was organised by village residents Sally Jarman and Philippa Purvis, with support from Sylva staff. The day brought the local community together to celebrate the village apple harvest, with residents contributing apples and taking part in the pressing process.
Using apple mill and pressing machines, the apples were chopped, crushed, pressed, and preserved into juice for the community. Volunteers assisted with collection, processing, and distribution, ensuring the harvest was shared widely. By the end of the event, more than 150 bottles of delicious, fresh, golden apple juice had been produced.
Sylva was pleased to provide the venue and facilities for this community-led event. It highlighted the collaborative effort of organisers, volunteers, and hosts in supporting local traditions and sustainable practices. Despite the rain, volunteers and visitors commented positively on the event with people remarking on the lively, friendly, busy vibe created.
We look forward to hosting the event again and incorporating the harvest from our own orchard for cropsharers.
