Last Sunday morning twenty people came to an event held in West Oxfordshire to learn about woodland management. The participants were taking part in Logs for Labour scheme events around the county. Logs for Labour is an innovative scheme run by the Trust for Oxfordshire’s Environment through their successful Community Woodland Programme. It is a way of connecting landowners who need some small scale woodland work carried out, with people who are interested in cutting their own firewood. There are multiple benefits; from bringing more woodland into active management, to health benefits for the participants.
The training session helped participants gain a deeper understanding about woodland management. Paul Orsi, Sylva’s Director for Forestry, explained the biodiversity as well as the economic and social benefits of active woodland management. The training session was brought to life through a woodland walk highlighting work undertaken by members of the Mill Wood Education and Restoration Project. Participants also learned about essential First Aid and Risk Assessments required to carry work out safely.
