Join Sylva’s Jen Hurst and Master Craftsman Philip Koomen for a ‘forest to furniture’ talk and tour of the stunning wood craft exhibition on 21st March at the River and Rowing Museum.
Fifteen environmental educators, forest school leaders and teachers met with the Sylva team to develop an innovative follow-on project to OneOak – due to be launched nationally in September 2015.
We had lively and informative debates about management issues such as tree pests and diseases, woodland habitat enhancement, developing areas for children’s play and exploration and wood production. Jen Hurst signposted the trainees to the wealth of organisations and information that exist in the forestry sector for further support and information on woodland management.
Sylva’s education manager is taking an active role in bringing the worlds of education and forestry closer together to revive Britain’s wood culture by working with the Forest Education Network.
“I am not going to train the teachers how to use myForest … I will train the young people to use it so they can do their own woodland management plans!”
As a direct outcome of our partnership with the FSA we have launched the myForest for Educators at the FSA National Conference in Essex.
Our joint fundraising campaign with the Forest School Association, via the crowdfunding portal Indiegogo, ended recently – raising a total of £1250.
The Sylva Trail – celebrating the 350th anniversary of John Evelyn’s Sylva and Britain’s wood culture – continues to draw visitors at the Forestry Commission’s National Arboretum at Westonbirt.
Crowdfunding works by thanking people who donate with a ‘perk’. Can you offer a perk that would encourage others to donate? We also need help in promoting the campaign. Finally of course, we are grateful for every donation towards this important campaign.
